One of the first masjids in Bolton.
The name Taiyabah — from the Arabic Tayyab, meaning purity — was given by the late Hazrat Sheikh Moulana Mohammed Zakariyya Saheb, author of Fazaail-e-Amaal.
The masjid was originally located in Canning Street, where Moulana Faruq Desai was appointed as its first Imam.
In February 1988, to accommodate the growing community, the present building on Blackburn Road was purchased — formerly a Congregational Sunday School. The first Imam in the new masjid was Qari Yakub Nanjee Saheb, followed by Qari Farook Saheb.
Plans are in the works to give the community a safe and welcoming space for learning, socialising and conducting ceremonies — and an educational resource for young and old alike.
The masjid also intends to invest further in Islamic education, supporting the community in matters including marriage and burial practices, and to establish an Islamic educational and cultural centre and library.

Zakat is a share of your savings given each year to those in need. It is 2.5% — £2.50 out of every £100 you have kept for a whole year.
You pay it if all of these are true:
Pick the same date each Islamic year — many choose a day in Ramadan — and work out your zakat on that day every year.
Nisab is the minimum you must own before zakat is due. It is fixed in gold and silver, so its value in pounds changes with the metal price.
The Hanafi school uses the silver nisab, which is lower — so more people qualify to give.
Include what you owe right now — bills, rent, money borrowed. For a mortgage, most scholars say to deduct only the payments due, not the whole loan. Ask the imam if you are unsure.
This is a guide, not a ruling. It follows the Hanafi position and uses the price you enter. Zakat can depend on your own circumstances, and scholars differ on things like pensions, shares and long-term debt. For anything you are unsure about, please ask the imam at the masjid.
Please do not call the masjid during Salah times.

Available for hire, for community and family events.
Taiyabah Centre — a separate building owned by the masjid — offers three halls and two kitchens for hire, suitable for a range of community and family occasions.
Bookings can be made up to 12 months ahead.
Every hall booking includes the kitchen and the cleaning. Hire is for the whole day.
Every hall booking includes the kitchen and the cleaning. Hire is for the whole day.
Monday – ThursdayThere is no one-hall rate at the weekend.
Kitchen on its own£100 deposit, paid online when you book. That is what reserves the date — nothing else holds it. It is not refundable if you cancel, but it is refunded in full if the masjid cannot give you the date.
The balance is due 30 days before your booking date and is paid at the office: cash, or bank transfer to Bolton Central Islamic Society.
Any hire agreement is subject to the venue being used in accordance with Islamic rulings. This includes, but is not limited to, no music being played on the premises. Agreeing to this is a condition of booking.
A £100 deposit reserves your date. The date is not held until the deposit is paid, and the deposit is paid online when you book. Nothing else holds a date.
The full balance is due 30 days before your booking date, and is paid at the office in cash or by bank transfer. It is not a fixed amount — it depends on how many halls you take, the day of the week, and whether the utensils or the utility charge apply — so the office confirms the figure when it calls you.
The deposit is not refundable if you cancel. It is refunded in full if the masjid cannot give you the date — if we decline the booking, or if two payments reach us for the same day. You will not be left out of pocket for something that was not your doing.
Cleaning is included in the hire charge and is carried out by Taiyabah Centre cleaners only. Please do not arrange your own cleaners. You are still responsible for taking away anything you brought in, and for leaving the venue in a reasonable state.
If you use the masjid’s utensils, a charge of £100 applies. If you cook your own food in the kitchen, a utility charge of 45p per person applies. Neither is charged unless it applies to your booking — the office confirms the final figure when it calls you.
A caretaker will be in touch before the day of your booking to arrange access to the venue. Please make sure the contact details you give us are ones you can be reached on.
Bookings can be made up to 12 months in advance. Dates beyond that are not available to book and cannot be provisionally held.
The £100 deposit is not refundable if you cancel, including if you cancel the same day you booked. Anything you have paid beyond the deposit is refunded if you cancel more than 30 days before your booked date. Inside 30 days the balance is not refundable — but we will move your booking to another date instead, once, subject to what is free. Ring the office as early as you can: the sooner we know, the more likely we can offer the date you want.
If the masjid cancels or cannot honour your date, everything you have paid is refunded in full, deposit included.
The person named on the booking is responsible for the condition the venue is left in, including anything done by their guests. Where damage has been caused, a charge of £100 applies. This is separate from the cleaning and waste-removal charges above.
Ring the office, or any of the booking team directly.

Taiyabah Masjid supports families through every part of an Islamic funeral, from the first phone call to the burial.
Bolton Council of Mosques runs the borough’s Muslim funeral service and will liaise with the council and the hospital on your behalf. They answer out of hours. Once they are involved, the masjid will arrange everything set out below.
Everything here is arranged by the masjid. If you are unsure what is needed or in what order, ring the office and someone will talk you through it.
The ritual washing of the deceased, carried out at the masjid according to Islamic practice.
The shroud is provided and the deceased is prepared in the proper manner.
The funeral prayer is held at the masjid. The office will confirm the time so that family and community can attend.
The deceased is transported between the hospital, the masjid and the cemetery.
Refrigerated preservation at the masjid where there is a wait before the burial can take place.
The masjid arranges the burial itself and co-ordinates with the cemetery so the family does not have to.
Catering for mourners can be arranged at Astley Hall. Masjid seating can also be provided.
The imams are available to the family afterwards, for guidance and for the questions that come later.
A death has to be registered, and the hospital or coroner has to release the deceased, before a burial can go ahead. Bolton Council of Mosques handles that side — liaising with the council and the hospital — which is why they are the first call. The masjid then takes care of the ghusl, the kafn, the janāzah and the burial itself.
You do not need to work out who does what. Ring either number and you will be pointed the right way.
Please check with the office before making arrangements. What can be provided depends on the circumstances and on when the deceased is released. Nothing here should be taken as confirmed for a particular funeral until the masjid has spoken to you.

Fees, class times and what the madrasah asks of students and parents — everything worth knowing before you apply.
The form asks for your child's details and the class you are applying for, and shows which classes are open and when applications close.
Open the application formThe office takes admission queries between 5pm and 7pm.
The madrasah has taught the community’s children since 1967, from age 4 through to Hifz and the Alimiyyah course. Everything below applies to every student, and submitting an application means agreeing to it.
The admission fee is payable once your child has been granted a place. Fees are collected through the madrasah office or the parent portal, and are payable whether or not your child attends. Fees are reviewed each year — please confirm the current rate with the office when you apply.
Attendance is taken seriously, because a class only works if the children in it are there. The madrasah expects at least 90% attendance across the year, and a child consistently below that by the end of a term will lose their place.
The madrasah follows the school term dates recommended by Bolton Council, so holidays should be arranged outside term time wherever possible.
If you must travel during term, collect a Holiday Absence Form from the madrasah office and return it three weeks before you travel. Without it, the absence is unauthorised. A handwritten letter is not accepted in place of the form.
Submitting an application does not mean your child has been granted a place. Classes fill quickly, and where a class is already full, applicants are added to a waiting list and contacted when a space comes up. Admission to Hifz is additionally subject to the headteacher’s approval.
You will need a working email address: it is how the office reaches you, and how you will sign in to the parent portal once your child has a place.

Every day the madrasah is closed this year, alongside the Islamic dates — so you can plan a trip without it costing your child their attendance.
The madrasah teaches 180 days this year — 36 weeks, Monday to Friday, 5pm to 7pm. Hifz students also attend on Saturday mornings. Everything below applies to every class.
The two long breaks — Ramadhan (33 days) and the summer (40 days) — are when a family trip costs nothing in attendance. Everything else is a week or less.
The Islamic calendar follows the moon, so the exact day is confirmed by sighting and can fall a day either side of what is shown here. These are calculated from the Umm al-Qurā calendar and are shown so you can plan — the masjid announces the confirmed date for Ramadhan and each Eid beforehand. The madrasah’s closure dates above are fixed and were set by the madrasah itself.
The madrasah follows Bolton Council’s term dates and expects holidays to be taken outside them. If you must travel during term, collect a Holiday Absence Form from the office and return it three weeks before you go.
Without it the absence is unauthorised, and it counts against the 90% your child needs to keep their place. A handwritten letter is not accepted.

Classes and workshops at the masjid for adults, alongside the children’s madrasah.

Evening Arabic for adults, taught at the masjid — from the alphabet upward.
Places are limited to fifteen per class and go in the order people sign up. Ring the office to put your name down in the meantime.
The office takes calls between 5pm and 7pm.
The aim is to get you reading and understanding the language of the Qur’an, not only reciting it. Classes start from the alphabet, so no previous study is assumed — and they run after the madrasah finishes, when the building is already open.

How to wash and prepare a body for burial — a duty that falls on the community, and one most people have never been shown.
Sessions are announced when they are scheduled. Ring the office to be told about the next one.
The office takes calls between 5pm and 7pm.
Washing the body of someone who has died is a farḍ kifāyah — an obligation on the community as a whole rather than on any one person. As long as enough people can do it, the duty is discharged for everyone. Where nobody can, it falls on everyone.
In practice most families discover, in the worst week of their lives, that they do not know how and do not know who to ask. This workshop exists so that fewer families are in that position — and so that when it happens on your street, someone nearby can step in.
It is taught at the masjid, which has its own mortuary, so what you are shown is what you would actually be doing in the room.
If you have had a bereavement and need help now, this is not the screen you want — the masjid’s funeral service is available around the clock. Ring the office, or open Birth, Marriage & Death from the menu.

“A Muslim who has something to leave behind should not let two nights pass without having his will written and kept ready.”
The Prophet ﷺ · Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī & Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمْ إِذَا حَضَرَ أَحَدَكُمُ الْمَوْتُ إِنْ تَرَكَ خَيْرًا الْوَصِيَّةُ
“When death approaches one of you, and you leave behind good, it is prescribed that you make a bequest — a duty upon those mindful of Allah.”
Qur’an · Sūrah al-Baqarah, 2:180
When a Muslim passes away without having made their wishes clear, their estate is left to be settled according to the default rules of the country they lived in — which may not reflect Islamic guidance on how a person’s wealth should be distributed.
An Islamic will sets out, in your own words, while you are able to:
Islamic inheritance follows fixed shares (Farā’iḍ) set out in the Qur’an for specific family members. A will does not override these shares, but it lets you address anything the fixed shares do not cover — for example, up to a third of your estate may be left to people or causes outside your Islamic heirs, such as a charitable gift.
Because these calculations depend on your own family circumstances, they are best worked through individually with the imam or a solicitor experienced in Islamic wills — rather than estimated in general terms here.
Some choose to include a charitable bequest in their will as a final, lasting act of Ṣadaqah. If you would like to consider including a gift to Taiyabah Masjid, let the solicitor helping you write your will know, or ask the office about adding a codicil if you already have a will in place.
This page is a starting point, not legal, financial or religious advice for your own circumstances. UK inheritance tax and probate rules are detailed and change over time — please speak to a qualified solicitor to write your will, and to the imam for guidance on the Islamic shares that apply to your family.

For many couples, an Islamic ceremony carries a significance that a civil registration alone does not provide. Taiyabah Masjid is able to conduct this Nikāḥ on your behalf, in keeping with authentic Islamic practice — both parties giving their free and informed consent, and the groom presenting a dowry (mahr) to the bride as part of the contract.
A Nikāḥ performed at the masjid is not, by itself, a marriage recognised under UK law. We strongly encourage every couple to additionally complete a separate civil marriage — this protects both partners’ legal rights, including around property and inheritance, should the need ever arise.
The same whatever the day and whatever the time.
